Internationale Nacht der Saturnbeobachtung

Hallo beisammen,

Ich habe heute Post von Jane Jones bekommen. Jane ist sogenannte "Outreach-Spezialistin" bei der NASA. Sie arbeitet für die Cassini-Mission. Auf gut Deutsch bedeutet dass, dass sie dafür zuständig ist, dass möglichst viele Leute von den Erfolgen dieser Mission erfahren und sich auch für das Saturn-System im allgemeinen interessieren. Das liegt sicherlich auch im Interesse von uns Amateur-Astronomen, denn was gibt es schöneres, als wenn sich die Allgemeinheit 'mal wieder für Astronomie interessiert. Jane greift dabei auf Freiwillige zurück, die sie im Rahmen der sogenannten "Saturn Observation Campaign" (kurz: SOC) rekrutiert hat. Dabei zu sein ist einfach und erfordert kein großes Fachwissen, sondern nur die Bereitschaft ab und an eine Veranstaltung zu machen (darum darf ich auch mit dabei sein ;)).

Ein anderes SOC-Mitglied, Bob Larcher aus Frankreich, hat nun die tolle Idee gehabt, eine Saturn-Beobachtungs-Nacht zu initieren - und zwar weltweit! Jane hat das aufgegriffen und nun tatsächlich umgesetzt. Ich halte das für eine super-tolle Idee und versuche, das hier in Deutschland mit zu organisieren.  Leider ist es dieses Jahr zeitlich knapp, denn das Event soll um den 10. Februar (Oppositionsdatum) statt finden. Dennoch versuche ich, es hier in Deutschland noch zu promoten. Ich habe die Mail auch gerade eben erst (12. Januar 2007) bekommen. Ich werde wahrscheinlich am Montag eine Datenbank stehen haben, in die man Veranstaltungen eintragen kann und die dann auch deutschsprachig ist. Jetzt wollte ich erst einmal möglichst Zeitnah davon berichten. Es wäre schön, wenn sich ein paar Vereine oder engagierte Amateure mit beteiligen könnten.

Ich denke, es wäre toll, wenn wir da kurzfristig etwas auf die Beine stellen könnten. Vielleicht bekommen wir dann ja einen Wolkenschieber geschenkt ;) Wer Interesse hat, kann mich gerne unter rgerhards@adiscon.com anmailen. Ich werde auch noch weiteres Material erstellen und möglichst kurzfristig, wahrscheinlich aber auch erst Montag, bereit stellen.

SOC member Bob Larcher suggested we start an annual tradition of a worldwide Saturn Observing Night or SOC SON. On a selected date (or near the selected date, weather permitting) as many SOC members as possible would hold a Saturn viewing event in their community (or their backyard, sidewalk, observatory.). We selected the date of 2007 Saturn Opposition, since it occurs on a Saturday night next month. We'll start planning a little earlier next year so we can do a better job of promotion. So this is our first experiment holding a Saturn night around the world.

Saturday February 10 is Saturn Opposition this year - when Saturn is on one side of the Earth and Saturn is directly on the opposite side of the Earth. Opposition is explained on the Viewing Saturn in 2007 page, for those not familiar with this term. This date makes a great night for our first annual Saturn Observing Night. It also marks the beginning of the best Saturn Observing time each year, when Saturn is visible soon after sunset. We have many more months of "Saturn time" this year.

I hope some of you will decide to hold an event on or near this date. If you do, please let me know by posting your event information on our new Saturn Event posting zone which you'll find on the same page with the other posting areas for posting your pictures and reporting your information. Once you submit your information (I will standardize with state, ciry date, hour location, etc. and approve it and post the events. I am still updating these pages - with the help of our Cassini webmaster and our web team.
